ST. LOUIS -- Atlanta Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur is known for his strong throwing arm, but it let him down Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals.Francoeur came up throwing as Matt Holliday tried to score on a two-out single by Jaime Garcia in the bottom of the second. The throw was offline and Holliday scored what turned the only run in the Cardinals 1-0 win.It was just a bad throw, kind of straight in the ground, which I dont usually do, Francoeur said. So that was a frustrating one.Right-hander Joel De La Cruz (0-4), still vying for his first major league win, gave up the run and two hits with five walks in 5 1/3 innings. To be honest feel like I didnt really pitch my best tonight, De La Cruz said through an interpreter. I know Ive got more in the tank and I can do a little bit better next time.Garcia (8-8) frustrated the Braves lineup, pitching eight scoreless innings, striking out 11. He became the first Cardinals pitcher with the lone RBI in a 1-0 win since Harvey Haddix did it against Pittsburgh on July 17, 1955.I think the only thing that would have made it better would be to hit a home run for the only run, Garcia said.He pitched out of a two-on, no out jam in the fourth, striking out Freddie Freeman and Matt Kemp before getting Adonis Garcia to ground out. Freeman and Kemp, the Braves Nos. 3 and 4 hitters, were a combined 0 for 6 against Jaime Garcia with five strikeouts.Especially in the 4th inning, we had first and third and nobody out and we had the right guys up too, Braves manager Brian Snitker said. He did a great job. He kept the ball off speed enough; he had a couple different breaking balls and keeping the ball off the fat part of the bat.The Cardinals have won six of their last eight games at home to improve to 26-30 at Busch Stadium. St. Louis has won all four games this season against the Braves.Atlantas Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to 16 games by leading the game off with a single.Atlanta has lost eight of its last 11 games at St. Louis.Francoeur tipped his cap to Garcia.Ive faced him many times obviously all through the years and he had all three pitches working tonight, Francoeur said. He had his changeup, his fastball/2-seamer and the curveball and he was doing what he wanted whenever he wanted.Seung Hwan Oh got the last three outs for his ninth save.Snitker thought De La Cruz pitched well.He battled his tail off out there and the movement was good in his cutter and slider, Snitker said. That kid he gives you everything he has every time he goes out there.HEAD OVER HEELSBraves 3B Adonis Garcia tumbled into the camera well next to the Atlanta dugout to make an acrobatic catch on Brandon Moss pop foul in bottom of the third inning. It was awesome, Francoeur said. I actually saw him from right field disappear and the next thing I saw was a baseball coming over the thing. It was a great play.WELCOME BACKCardinals All-Star INF Matt Carpenter returned from the disabled list after missing 24 games with a right oblique strain. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cam Newton has had it with NFL officials. The Carolina Panthers quarterback fired away Sunday, saying he doesnt feel protected by them on the field and that their lack of calls is taking the fun out of the game for me.The leagues reigning MVP said he simply doesnt get the same calls that other QBs in the league get.Enough is enough, Newton said after Carolinas 30-20 win over Arizona. I dont think theres a person that can go through what I go through and keep their head, you know what Im saying? Hits to the head, thats one thing, but when youre not protected in the pocket, thats another thing. It became the story of my life ever since I came in (to the league). Its always, `Oh, we missed that, Im sorry. Thats bull c---.Newton said he plans to talk to NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about why he is treated differently than other QBs.I just cant keep accepting, `Oh, we missed that one, or `I apologize for doing that or `I didnt see it. Newton said. Thats horse c---. Coming from a person whos been fined before, coming from a person who everybodys expecting a lot from, Im still going. But yet, when you constantly see the hits, when you constantly see flags being picked up and flags not being thrown, and to see other quarterbacks getting it for lesser physical hits, its taking the fun for me out.Im just being honest about that.Newton said the breaking point for him came in the third quarter when Arizona defensive tackle Calais Campbell came crashing into Newtons knees , reminiscent of the hit that sidelined Tom Brady in 2008.Newton was slow to get up, but Campbell was not penalized for the hit. After the Brady injury , the leagues competition committee adopted a clarification of thee rule on hits to a quarterback in the knee area or below the following offseason, prohibiting a defender on the ground that hasnt been blocked or fouled directly into the quarterback from lunging or diving at the quarterbacks lower legs.ddddddddddddI could have torn my ACL, Newton said.Panthers coach Ron Rivera was angry with officials after the play, but was not asked about the low hit after the game.Rivera has previously said this season that he doesnt feel Newton gets as many calls from officials because of his style of play. You have to look back and look at it from my vantage point, Newton said. I play this game one way. Im no different than anybody else. Im just trying to win football games, and whatever Im asked to do, thats what Im going to do. If Im asked to run, Ill run. If theres nothing open downfield, Im going to scramble. But yet, at the end of the day, theres rules set in place that if you get hit like this, if you get hit after the throw, the penalty (flag) is supposed to be thrown.Newton, who took four helmet-to-helmet hits in the season opener against Denver resulting in no penalty yardage for the Panthers, called it frustrating. He also knows that some people will take what he is saying out of context, but said he couldnt hold his tongue any longer. When I see other guys get calls, they dont have to be no MVP, they dont have to be this type of tier of a player, Newton said. I look at how they get hit. For every hit they get a call, I can match a hit in my career that I didnt get a call. ---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
