Sometimes a player waits until senior year to savor the moment. BYUs Mary Lake is two weeks into her collegiate career and already reveling in every game. The freshman libero, the espnW player of the week, earned MVP honors last weekend at the Sports Imports D.C. Koehl Classic at Ohio State. The No. 10 Cougars (6-0) dispatched Wyoming, LIU-Brooklyn and host Ohio State, ranked 11th nationally at the time, to win the event. The 5-foot-7 Lake had 61 digs in the three matches, including 38 against the Buckeyes -- the most ever by a BYU player in a match in the rally-scoring era -- in a five-set thriller.Mary was phenomenal, Cougars coach Heather Olmstead said. She was fearless. She sees the game really well and with that, has good instincts, so she was seeing the court well and was talking and communicating. Shes such a leader in the backcourt that it calms our team down.Lakes fast start as a collegian is even more impressive given a pair of knee injuries. Coming into her final year at Californias Palm Springs High, the senior captain couldnt wait to defend the CIF Southern Section Division 2A title -- the equivalent of a state championship in the desert of Coachella Valley where she grew up.Her Indians had never won state and werent projected to do it her junior year. But a magical run propelled the No. 8 seeds to defeat the top two teams. The only word that comes to mind is surreal, she said. Then an ACL tear to her right knee ended her last high school season before it began. The first two weeks were rough, but after that, she refused to give in to the negativity.Positivity is a major part of recovery, she said. I called BYU as soon as it happened and I was afraid it would affect my scholarship, but they were super nice to me and gave me the confidence I needed so I could bounce back from it.Lake came to Provo early to finish her rehab and traveled with the Cougars on their two-week tour of China in May that included six games. She was an integral part of the lineup then. But six weeks ago, she tore the meniscus in her right knee.I was grateful it wasnt my ACL again, said Lake, who will wear a brace for the remainder of the season. The knee issues give her perspective about volleyball she didnt always have. At 5 years old, the youngest of six knew the game would be in her future. She was determined to follow her sister Melissa, a libero for the Cougars from 2008-09, into the college game.I knew I loved volleyball, but Im more grateful for it now, Lake said. The days I have tough practices I remember I could be injured and not playing at all. Its made me stronger for sure and mentally tough. One of the things I love about Mary is shes already been through a lot of adversity with that knee, Olmstead said. She found a new love for the game because it was taken away from her. Yet not even Lake could forecast this kind of beginning to her college career. The Cougars started the season in their own BYU Invitational in front of a record crowd of 4,672 and swept Utah Valley. Lake, with 12 digs in that one, has 112 to lead the team.Playing at the site of this years final four over the weekend, BYU didnt get rattled despite dropping the first two sets to the Buckeyes. The Cougars soared to a 21-2 lead in the third set, dominated the fourth and never trailed in the fifth. It was nerve-racking, said Lake, also the West Coast Conference player of the week. We didnt come out as confident as we could have been, but our confidence came and we realized we could play with them. It was crazy that we came back and won.In addition to enjoying her team, Lake also has fallen in love with BYU, where the admitted calculus junkie is majoring in math with plans to teach.I chose my school not only for the amazing volleyball program but for the school itself, she said. Im Mormon, its a great volleyball program with good people here. I visited other schools, but I knew I belonged at BYU.Nike Air Max Nederland . This should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season. Darren Helm scored on Detroits sixth attempt in the shootout and then Jonas Gustavsson stopped Andrew Shaws shot, lifting the Detroit Red Wings to a 5-4 win over the Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday night.JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Blaine Gabbert is getting the first crack at Jacksonvilles quarterback job, albeit without three offensive starters. Coach Gus Bradley announced Thursday that Gabbert will start against the Miami Dolphins on Friday night, but he plans to give Chad Henne some repetitions behind the first-team offensive line. "I think that hes really shown a lot of poise," Bradley said of Gabbert. "I think he handles situations that have been presented to him in practice. They both have done some really good things, both have made some really good progress. Now, are they there yet? No, and I hope they would both answer it the same way. We just felt like with Blaine, with what hes done the last couple days in practice and how hes responded, we decided to give him the nod." Bradley also said running back Maurice Jones-Drew, who is recovering from foot surgery, wont play in the teams preseason opener as a precaution. "We just feel like hes making good progress but still has to work on conditioning," Bradley said. "Hes going in the right direction, but we felt that was needed for his recovery and his continued progress. And we want to be smart with him and not force anything. But were pleased with where hes at right now and excited about it, and its good." Eight others, including four starters, will be held out because of injuries. The group includes starting defensive end Jeremy Mincey (concussion), rookie safety Johnathan Cyprien (hamstring) and receivers Justin Blackmon (groin) and Cecil Shorts III (calf). The others are backup running back Justin Forsett (toe), defensive tackle Brandon Deaderick (groin) and cornerbacks Jeremy Harris (back) and Lionel Smith (quadriceps). For the rebuilding Jaguars, the game gives Bradley a chance to see players in an even more competitive environment than practice -- something hes talked about throughout training camp. Miami, meanwhiile, is expected to give its starters more work than they got in the Hall of Fame game against Dallas last week.dddddddddddd The Dolphins starting offence played 10 snaps in against the Cowboys, and coach Joe Philbin said the first team likely will see a little more action against Jacksonville. That could include receiver Mike Wallaces first game with Miami since signing a $60 million, five-year contract. He missed the opener because of a groin injury. The home crowd likely will focus on the QBs. Although Bradley calls the situation an open competition, many believe its Gabberts job to lose. The Jaguars look at Gabberts first two seasons and find it difficult to fully evaluate what he can do and whether he can be a franchise quarterback. They point to his rookie season, when he was thrown into the starting lineup in Week 3, without much off-season work and asked to play with a lacklustre receiving corps and a lame-duck coaching staff. Gabbert was supposed to show improvement last year, but Jones-Drew went down early in the season and Gabberts offensive line was a patchwork unit that provided inconsistent protection. With MJD and the line getting healthy, and the receivers a year older, the Jaguars want to see what Gabbert can do in 2013. It really starts against the Dolphins, when Gabbert will play against live action for the first time since a forearm injury sideline late last season. "I always expect to start football games," Gabbert said. "But at the same time I know competition is always going to be the theme of this organization, so you never take things for granted. You have to go out there and prove yourself day in and day out." Henne handled the news well even though he would prefer to start against his former team. "Theres no disappointment," he said. "Its preseason. Nobodys decided anything in preseason yet. Theres still competition here." ' ' '
