PHILADELPHIA -- Jay Wright led Villanova on a tour around the concourse of the Palestra, the basketball shrine that has served as the hardwood home for many of the games greats.Wilt Chamberlain played high school ball here. Kobe and LeBron, too.Theres even a spot dedicated to the greatest Villanova team of all -- at least, at the time the display was installed -- the 1985 national champions. The Palestra curators might want to clear space for `Novas 2016 title team -- and maybe even prep a new wing for this years Wildcats.Jalen Brunson scored 26 points and Josh Hart had 21 to help No. 1 Villanova hold off La Salle 89-79 on Tuesday night.I just wanted to remind them of the history, remind them of the tradition, of what happens in here, Wright said.La Salle (4-3) came oh-so close to making an upset happen.Johnnie Shuler and Pookie Powell made late 3-pointers that kept the deficit at seven. La Salle, which has never defeated a No. 1 team, got more late help from long range when Jordan Price popped a 3 that made it a four-point game.La Salle fans went wild. The Wildcats seemed shaken. But the great city teams that decorated the 89-year-old walls of the ol gym nestled on Penns Ivy League campus dont really lose to unranked underdogs. And the national champs werent going down to La Salle.Donte DiVincenzos late dunk and a handful of free throws sealed the win for Villanova (9-0) in its first game of the season as the top-ranked team in the country.Powell scored 27 points. La Salle just didnt have enough to get past Villanova and earn its biggest win since it reached the 2013 Sweet 16.Brunson, whose father, Rick, starred at Temple, made 10 of 17 shots and hit a pair of big buckets down the stretch to give Villanova a 10-point cushion.Hes one of those guys that you know at any point that you need a bucket, he can go get one for you, Wright said.Brunson just might find his image stamped on the Palestra wall a decade or so from now.It gave us time to bond, Brunson said of the tour. We realized what games are played here, what teams played here, who was from the area.Mikal Bridges scored 16 points and national championship game star Kris Jenkins had 12.When the balls bouncing around, they seem to get it and make a 3, La Salle coach John Giannini said. The reason for their excellence on a national level is their intangibles. They dont let up. I dont care if theyre playing us, playing Kentucky, anybody. That is the same team every single second of every single game they play.BIG PICUTRELa Salle: The Explorers lost three times to No. 1 teams in the 1950s, once each in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s and 2010s. La Salle last lost to a No. 1 team 90-65 to Kansas on Dec. 12, 2009. They are 0-8 vs. No. 1 foes.We just had a lot of lapses and breakdowns, Powell said.Villanova: The Wildcats went 5-1 as an AP Top 25 No. 1 last season. They were the top team in the country for three weeks and proved they were worthy of the ranking with the programs second national championship. The Wildcats are trying to become the first repeat champs since Florida in 2006-07.POLL IMPLICATIONSVillanova was 5-1 last season at No. 1 and is trying to better that mark this year to stay in the top spot.We didnt really handle it a certain way last year, Hart said.BIG 17Villanova continued to dominate the Philadelphia city series known as the Big 5. The Wildcats extended their series-record win streak to 17 against La Salle, Penn, Saint Josephs and Temple. SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- Walk into a major event hosted by the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball, NHL or NASCAR, and youll notice how personality-centric the merchandise is.T-shirts, photos and uniforms bear the athletes names, a way for fans to broadcast to the world whom they support.Going from the choices given at these events to a major golf tournament is night and day, though the golf world is slowly making progress. The four major pro sports have long had group licensing agreements that aggregate the athletes rights and allow the greater organization, either the league or the union, to assign those rights to the companies that pay for them. Although NASCAR drivers are independent contractors, much like golf and tennis players, individual gear has long been a part of their sport as merchandise trailers have now been aggregated into a huge tent of driver-dominated merchandise by retailer Fanatics. For too long, the major golf tournaments offered gear only with the logo of the tournament itself but with no mention of the players the fans followed. That started changing around a decade ago, when Nike started announcing Tiger Woods scripting of his outfits, and fans bought what he wore on the day they saw him. See: Sunday red.The business turned on a single day when Tiger wore a mock turtleneck at the Buick Invitational in 2003.We sold tens of thousands of those shirts immediately, said Peter Kent, the PGA Tours senior vice president of revenue who was working for Nike at the time.Today, Kent said that because of what Tiger has done to the business, on-site merchandising, while nothing like the other sports, is more athlete-centric in golf than ever before.Kent manages the merchandise team at 15 PGA Tour events and says the focus is on the athlete and what Nike, Under Armour, Adidas and Puma can bring to the table. At this weeks PGA Championship, whats the first thing a fan sees when walking into the merchandise tent? The Nike outfits has of Rory McIlroy and Brooks Koepka. A few steps away is an Under Armour wall of Jordan Spieth shirts. Some of thee racks show a key of what hell wear each day at Baltusrol.ddddddddddddeople now expect us to have what the top players are wearing, said Mike Quirk, senior director of licensing and merchandise for the PGA of America. In fact, many of them know when they come here what the guys are wearing because they had seen it on social media. The player shirts that Nike and Under Armour make available also have the PGA Championship logo on the side, a nice touch for the fan to show he or she was at the event as well.Quirk acknowledges that the golf merchandise world is five years behind the others, but also mentions the risk of doing too much with the players. If Jordan Spieth wins here, we sell it out, Quirk said. If he doesnt make the cut, we have his weekend shirts that he didnt wear. The most gear of any player in the PGA Merchandise tent was of McIlroy and Woods. Woods wasnt playing and McIlroy was flirting with the cut line on the back nine late Friday afternoon.Unlike player jerseys in team sports or the firesuits of NASCAR drivers, outfits worn at a golf major arent recycled, while athlete designs in non-golf sports can move on to the next stop or go to a home market. That protection obviously doesnt exist in the golf world. That means those involved in the business of golf have to rely on the apparel companies that sign the best in the world to continue to personalize and innovate at retail. The opportunity for golf fans when they put on a jersey, particularly young ones, is to associate with their favorite golfer in the way they associate with their favorite player in another sport.I think the system that is in place now is a good one, Kent said. We have to take advantage of how the big sponsors capitalize on the golfers they have.Kent says he doesnt foresee a day when the PGA Tour would aggregate the licensing permission of all the golfers so they could sell group rights to companies much in the way other sports do.
