SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Carlos Hyde outran the more heralded Todd Gurley, San Franciscos defensive front proved more fearsome than Los Angeles line and the resumption of the all-California NFC West rivalry after a more than 21-year wait proved to be decidedly one-sided.Hyde ran for 88 yards and two scores and the 49ers defense did the rest, shutting down Gurley and the Rams running game in a 28-0 victory that spoiled the first NFL game for a Los Angeles-based team since 1994.That wasnt what we expected, certainly not what I expected for the first game back in L.A., coach Jeff Fisher said. We have some work to do obviously.Shaun Draughn also ran for a score and Blaine Gabbert threw a touchdown pass to Vance McDonald to help the 49ers win their first game under coach Chip Kelly in convincing fashion.Case Keenum threw for just 130 yards with two interceptions, Gurley was held to 47 yards on 17 carries and the Rams barely even threatened the Niners as they were held to 185 yards and 10 first downs all game. The defense had to carry the weight this week, and I think we did that, said linebacker NaVorro Bowman, who had an interception. Todd Gurley is looked at as one of the best running backs in the league, and we took that personally tonight. Here are some other takeaways from the game:GOFF WAITS: Despite the struggles by Keenum, who was frequently off-target and struggled to get the ball down field at all, Fisher is not ready to turn the offense over to No. 1 overall draft pick Jared Goff. The Rams traded a boat load of draft picks to acquire Goff in the spring but made him inactive as the third-stringer in the opener .This doesnt change anything as far as the quarterbacks are concerned, Fisher said.EFFICIENT GABBERT: Kelly picked Gabbert as his starting quarterback over Colin Kaepernick in part because of his consistency through the offseason. Thats basically how Gabbert played in the opener, avoiding the big mistakes with no turnovers or sacks but making few big plays with only one completion that went for more than 20 yards. Gabbert finished 22 for 35 for 170 yards and the TD.He was very efficient with the ball, Kelly said. He did not turn the ball over and did not put the ball in harms way. He did some good things in critical situations and got a lot of different guys involved in the passing game.LOST COMPOSURE: Rams defensive lineman Aaron Donald was ejected in the fourth quarter when he made contact with an official. The infraction came after Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree gave an extra push to Gabbert following a scramble. As players on both teams started jawing, Donald pushed a 49ers player and then made contact with an official. Donald was called for two personal fouls on the play and ejected.I let my emotions get the best of me, Donald said. No excuses.SMALL-PLAY AUSTIN: The Rams gave receiver Tavon Austin a contract extension worth a reported $42 million this summer because of his ability to make big plays. Those were lacking against the Niners. Austin touched the ball five times on offense for just 15 yards. He caught four of the 12 passes thrown his way for 13 yards and added 2 more on an end-around. His biggest play of the night was a 28-yard punt return .We have to stretch the field, he said. We need to keep doing what we were doing. We were open a lot out there today. We just couldnt connect. Thats the main thing. Well connect on it.PUNT PARTY: For much of the game, the punters had as much impact as any other players. Los Angeles Johnny Hekker and San Franciscos Bradley Pinion combined for 17 punts, including seven in an offensively inept third quarter that featured 48 yards, three first downs and one turnover.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLWholesale Vapormax Mens . KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Derrick Johnson saw everybody else picking off passes for Kansas City and decided to join the party. Then he figured he might as well score, too.The veteran linebacker snagged one of six interceptions thrown by Ryan Fitzpatrick, scored one of the Chiefs two touchdowns off turnovers, and put an exclamation mark on a rather bizarre 24-3 victory over the hapless, turnover-prone New York Jets on Sunday. We put an emphasis on taking away the ball all the time, said Johnson, who scored his fourth career TD. If you can get a turnover, its a big momentum changer. And if you can score, its even bigger.A turnover? How about get eight.Marcus Peters had two of the interceptions for the Chiefs (2-1), including the first of four in the fourth quarter. Johnson, Daniel Sorenson and D.J. White grabbed the others as the Jets piled up their most turnovers since setting a franchise record with 10 in a loss to the Patriots on Nov. 21, 1976.Im stunned, disappointed ... mad, Jets coach Todd Bowles said. We could have come out prepared. We could have come out and executed better. Theres 50 million things when you lose and we lost. Pick any one of them.Alex Smith was 25 of 33 for 237 yards and a touchdown for Kansas City, while Spencer Ware added 75 yards rushing. But it was the performance of the defense -- and all those Jets turnovers -- that helped the Chiefs bounced back from their first regular-season defeat in 12 games.Eric Berry picked off a pass in the end zone late in the third quarter, and a fumbled kick return by the Jets Jalin Marshall was returned 27 yards by Demetrius Harris for another score.I think it stemmed from practice this week, Berry said. Everybody had a great practice. The emphasis was on finishing plays and not being too concerned with the score. The Jets Matt Forte, who scored three times against the Bills, was held to just 65 yards rushing, while wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker were held in check. But it was Fitzpatrick who was downright dismal a week after torching Buffalo, going 20 of 44 for 188 yards. His six picks tied a franchise record while establishing a career high, surpassing the five that he threw for St.dddddddddddd Louis against Minnesota on Dec. 11, 2005.Ive had some bad ones, he said, so all I can do is put it behind me and move on.CHIEFS NOT INFALLIBLEKansas City appeared to take a 24-3 lead in the third quarter when Ware stretched the ball into the pylon for a touchdown. But officials reviewed the play and saw the ball beginning to come out, and decided that it was a fumble resulting in a touchback for New York. You dont want them dropping the ball, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, but its hard to tell them not to stretch.TURNOVER TROUBLEThings could have been worse for New York. Berry and Sorenson dropped picks moments before Sorenson hauled in his interception, and Fitzpatrick fell on his own fumble earlier in the game.PETERS A PICKERIt was the second straight two-interception day for Peters, who has quickly become one of the leagues top cornerbacks. He had eight as a rookie in the regular season a year ago. When things are happening like today, Peters said, you enjoy. You embrace the opportunities.DECKER MIADecker had his streak of touchdowns in six straight games come to an end. The Jets wide receiver, who has scored 15 times in his last 19 games, had his only catch in the fourth quarter.MARSHALL PLAYSMarshall was active after missing practice earlier in the week with a slightly sprained knee. But shadowed by Peters and Berry, the star wide receiver had a tough time getting open. He finished with three catches for 27 yards, on several occasions complaining about the tight coverage.INJURY REPORTJets: CB Darrelle Revis was evaluated for an eye injury and missed the final series of the first half. He returned after the break. ... DL Lawrence Thomas left in the first half with a shoulder injury. ... LB Erin Henderson was inactive because of a foot sprain.Chiefs: RB Jamaal Charles (ACL surgery) remained inactive for the third straight week, but coach Andy Reid insisted the four-time Pro Bowl selection is getting closer to playing.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
