OLYMPICSRIO DE JANEIRO -- The medal race at the Rio Olympics will likely remain close going into the final weekend. For second place, that is.The U.S. -- which has left the last five Summer Games with more medals than any other country -- is about to make it six in a row, and the Americans seem like theyll do so emphatically. Through Tuesday, the U.S. had 84 medals, 33 more than China and 34 more than Britain.Take away the games that dealt with boycotts in 1980 and 1984, and the Americans are on pace for the biggest medal-count romp since outdistancing Sweden by 40 medals at the 1948 London Games. Incidentally, the all-time medal-count-margin record is way out of reach, that being the U.S. win by 220 medals at the St. Louis Games of 1904.RIO DE JANEIRO -- Police investigating reports that American swimmer Ryan Lochte and three of his teammates were robbed at gunpoint in a taxi so far have found little evidence supporting the account, and say the swimmers were unable to provide key details in police interviews.A police official with knowledge of the investigation told The Associated Press that police cannot find their taxi driver or witnesses. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing.Lochtes attorney, Jeff Ostrow, said there was no question the robbery happened and that Lochte had 24-hour security hired after the incident. He had been staying in his hotel room and intended to go back to the U.S. soon.According to statements from Lochte and the United States Olympic Committee, the swimmers were returning to the athletes village by taxi after a night out at the French Olympic teams hospitality house in the Rodrigo de Freitas area in the upscale south zone of the city. The outing was several hours after Olympic swimming ended Saturday night at the Rio Games.RIO DE JANEIRO -- Russia was stripped of a relay gold medal from the 2008 Beijing Olympics after one of its female runners tested positive for steroids in a reanalysis of her doping samples.Sprinter Yulia Chermoshanskaya tested positive for two drugs -- stanozolol and turinabol -- and has been retroactively disqualified and stripped of the gold in the womens 4x100-meter relay, along with her teammates, the International Olympic Committee said.Chermoshanskaya was also disqualified from the 200 meters, in which she finished eighth.Belgium stands to be upgraded to the relay gold, with Nigeria moving up to silver and Brazil to bronze.PRO FOOTBALLSAN DIEGO -- Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has been hospitalized after complaining of stomach pain.Cardinals spokesman Mark Dalton said that, after arriving for the teams joint practice with the Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium, Arians told his medical staff he was not feeling well and had stomach pain.Dalton said later that Arians had undergone tests and would remain hospitalized overnight. BARCELONA, Spain -- For a second straight match, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone made all the right moves to get a result that tightened competition at the top of the Spanish league.Simeones decision to send on Kevin Gameiro proved key to beating a Deportivo La Coruna side that remained stubborn despite playing the entire second half with 10 men.Four minutes after going on, the striker used his speed to set up Antoine Griezmann for the goal that secured a 1-0 victory with 20 minutes remaining at Vicente Calderon Stadium.Gameiro played well as soon as he went on and was decisive in the move that produced the goal, Simeone said. We had a tough time settling into the match and it was getting away from us.After drawing its first two matches of the season against newly-promoted sides, Atletico appeared to have already seriously damaged its hopes of making the title race a three-way contest with Barcelona and Real Madrid for a fourth straight season. But Simeones side is right back in the thick of things after a positive week. Atletico climbed into third place and closed to within two points of Madrid -- a day after the leader stumbled to a 2-2 draw at Las Palmas. Atletico also pulled to within one point of second-placed Barcelona, five days after its 1-1 draw at the defending champions on Wednesday.Simeones latest tactical twist came after he pulled Angel Correa and Fernando Torres off the bench while trailing at Barcelona, and the pair immediately linked up for Correas equalizer. While Simeone kept pulling the strings Sunday, it again fell to Griezmann to provide the goal. The goal was his fifth in six rounds this season, putting him level with Barcelonas Luis Suarez as the leagues leading scorers. The France forward tapped in a squared pass from Gameiro, who had beaten the offside trap to reach a throughball from Juanfran Torres. The victory came at a price, however.Atletico lost midfielder Augusto Fernandez and defender Jose Gimenez to leg injuries in the first half. Both players had to be stretchered off the pitch. The club said that Fernandez completely tore a ligament in his right knee, while Gimenez injureed a muscle in his right leg.ddddddddddddDeportivo was able to stifle Atleticos attack until Faycal Fajr left his team a man down in first-half injury time when he picked up a second yellow card for a low tackle on Nicolas Gaitan. It was Atletico in complete control for the rest of the match, and only the goalkeeping of German Lux kept the visitors clinging to a scoreless draw.Lux pushed Yannick Carrascos long strike onto his bar in the 53rd at the start of a barrage by Atletico. Lux then denied Carrasco from close range before saving a point-blank header by Angel Correa.Simeone took the risky decision to pull Carrasco, Atleticos most incisive player until that point, for Gameiro. The decision proved key to getting the winner, as Gameiro darted free down the right side before finding Griezmann with his low pass.It was Deportivos fifth straight round without a win.We played an intelligent first half, but after the sending off of Faycal Fajr we couldnt continue with the same plan, Lux said. It changed completely. We have to pick ourselves up and get past this.---VILLARREAL 3, OSASUNA 1Villarreal followed its 1-1 draw at Real Madrid with a comfortable 3-1 win over promoted Osasuna to move to fourth place with 12 points, two behind leader Madrid.Alexandre Pato, Bruno Soriano and Nicola Sansone scored first-half goals to give the hosts their third win in four matches.Villarreal is yet to lose after six rounds. The other two unbeaten teams are Madrid and Atletico Madrid.---LEGANES 1, VALENCIA 2Valencia continued its rebound under interim coach Salvador Voro Gonzalez with a second straight win after the club was in last place under former manager Pako Ayestaran.Nani and Mario Suarez, both newcomers to Valencia this season, scored to fight back for a 2-1 win at promoted club Leganes, which struck first through Alexander Szymanowski. This is the third time Voro, a long-time club employee, has acted as caretaker coach for Valencia as the club searches for a permanent replacement for Ayestaran.
