ROME - Canadian Milos Raonic advanced to his first semifinal of the season Friday after a 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 quarter-final win over Jeremy Chardy of France at the Italian Open. Raonic, from Thornhill, Ont., will next play second-ranked Novak Djokovic of Serbia, who is back on track after a right wrist injury sidelined him last week. Raonic led by a set and a break at 6-3, 4-3 before losing his serve for the first time in the tournament. Chardy broke again at 6-5 to force a third set on an overcast day at the Foro Italico. Djokovic, who sat out last weeks Madrid Open, overcame a stiff challenge from David Ferrer before grinding out a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win. Djokovic double-faulted on his first match point but then won a 38-shot rally before eventually closing it out in just over 2 1/2 hours. Djokovic is aiming for third Rome title, having won the clay-court event in 2008 and 2011. Also reaching the last four was Grigor Dimitrov, who celebrated his 23rd birthday with a win when 36-year-old Tommy Haas retired after losing the first set 6-2 due to a right shoulder injury — spoiling a matchup between the youngest and oldest players in the top 20. Dimitrovs semifinal opponent will be either seven-time Rome champion Rafael Nadal or Wimbledon title-holder Andy Murray, who were playing later in the last key warm-up event before the French Open starts in nine days. "Its definitely one of the most memorable days of my life," Dimitrov said upon reaching his first Masters series semifinal. "Im just a happy birthday boy today." In womens play, Sara Errani took advantage of a supportive crowd to beat second-seeded Li Na 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 and reach the semifinals for the second consecutive year. Errani will next meet either 2007 and 2008 Rome champion Jelena Jankovic or third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska. In the other half of the draw, 2008 French Open champion Ana Ivanovic beat 13th-seeded Carla Suarez Navarro 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 and will face either top-ranked Serena Williams or Zhang Shuai of China. The 10th-seeded Errani is attempting to become the first Italian to win the tournament since Raffaella Reggi took the title 29 years ago in Taranto. The last Italian man to win was Adriano Panatta back in 1976. Li was unusually inconsistent, committing 52 unforced errors to Erranis 21, and appeared rattled by a close call from the chair umpire early in the third set. Errani celebrated by waving her arms to incite the crowd. "I did well not to get carried away by the euphoria," Errani said. "Its difficult to describe how it felt at the end. The fans were incredible." ___ With files from The Canadian Press. Serge Savard Canadiens Jersey . Arsenal controlled large spells of the match, but an own goal from Kieran Gibbs and a late strike from Wayne Rooney helped lift United to fourth place in the table with 19 points. The Gunners tested David De Gea with a flurry of early chances, but the United goalkeeper was equal to the task, turning up with save after save to keep the hosts at bay. United eventually settled into the game but still found themselves second- best, until a moment of fortune in the 56th minute allowed the visitors to steal the lead against the run of play. A cross into the box was punched away by Wojciech Szczesny, but the Arsenal goalkeeper collided with Gibbs in the process. Antonio Valencia was arriving to smash the loose ball toward goal and his attempt redirected off of Gibbs and just inside the far post. Hard done by the opener, the Gunners threw numbers forward in search of an equalizer, and United punished them in the 85th minute when a well- orchestrated counter saw Rooney get through on goal and chip a shot into the back of the net. United had another glorious chance early on in stoppage time when Angel Di Maria found himself through on goal, but the Argentine failed to convert from close range, sending his effort just wide of the post. Arsenal would pull one back deep into stoppage time as substitute Olivier Giroud latched on to a ball of the top and hammered a left-footed effort into the top corner, but United held off the hosts to hand Louis van Gaal his first away win in Premier League play. Arsenal sees its 23-match home unbeaten run coome to an end, leaving the Gunners in eighth place on 17 points.dddddddddddd Chelsea remained firmly atop the Premier League by cruising to a 2-0 defeat of 10-man West Bromwich Albion at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The Blues produced early goals courtesy of Diego Costa in the 11th minute and Eden Hazard in the 25th minute, and the Baggies were left no way back into the match after Claudio Yacob earned himself a needless red card due to a rash challenge in the 29th minute. Chelsea improves to 32 points on the season to go seven points clear of Southampton, though the Saints can close the gap again with maximum points at Aston Villa on Monday. Manchester City maintained third place in the table by coming from behind in a 2-1 victory over Swansea City. The Welsh club had taken the lead after nine minutes when a well-worked move resulted in Wilfried Bony turning in the opening, but Stefan Jovetic pulled one back just 10 minutes later to bring the Citizens level. The winner came in the second half thanks to Yaya Toure, who nabbed his second goal of the season to put City on 24 points. Everton bounced back from two successive draws to rally for a 2-1 victory over West Ham United at Goodison on Saturday. Romelu Lukaku gave the Toffees a first-half lead only to see Mauro Zarate equalize 11 minutes into the second period, but Leon Osman made the most of Samuel Etoos superb square pass and tucked home a tidy finish for a 74th- minute winner. Rounding out Saturdays action, Danny Ings scored twice in the span of a minute to lead Burnley to a second consecutive victory with a 2-1 defeat of Stoke City, Moussa Sissoko netted the lone goal in Newcastles 1-0 win over QPR and Sunderland played to an uneventful 0-0 draw at Leicester City.
