CHICAGO -- For the first time in four years, the American League representative at the World Series had to play its designated hitter, Carlos Santana, in left field Friday night. But commissioner Rob Manfred said he is not in favor of playing the World Series under a single set of rules in future years.I think the problem is picking what that one set of rules is, Manfred told ESPN.com, following Friday nights presentation of the Roberto Clemente Award. The National League plays without a DH all year. Their team is built to play without a DH. Its the opposite in the American League. And I think the competitive ramifications of picking a single set of rules would be significant. Both teams have to adjust. Each of them has to adjust at some point in the series. And given that we play the game two different ways during the year, that makes some sense to me.While the commissioner has expressed an openness to changing the game in many other ways, he has consistently said he is in favor of keeping the DH rule. So he doesnt believe in changing that, even though having different sets of rules presents a major impact on baseballs most important games of the year.Honestly, I remain of the view that the principal value of the difference in rules is the conversation that it generates, Manfred said. Even in a week where we have two unbelievable story lines [involving each team], most of the last 24 hours have been consumed by conversations about the designated hitter. And when people are talking about the game, I think thats a good thing for the game.Indians manager Terry Francona admits he is biased, but he believes American League teams are penalized by the inability to use their best lineups.I dont think it makes it a bad game, he said before Game 3. I just dont necessarily agree with this. I just think you set your team up the way you set it up, and then you get to the most important games and youre doing something different.Cubs skipper Joe Maddon, a former manager for the ALs Tampa Bay Rays for nine years, told the Chicago Tribune in September hed prefer the MLB move to eradicate the DH as opposed to including the DH in the National League. Its a better game, a more interesting game, Maddon said. If you want to teach the game to young people trying to understand and learn our game and are really into the nuances, the NL game is a lot more of that. Now having had a chance to do both, theres no comparison with these two games.?Manfred understands that the risks the Indians had to take in playing Santana in the outfield gave more ripple effects than an ordinary DH-rule conversation. But I also believe that unless youre going to play by a single set of rules all year long, theres no way you can take the World Series and say were going to use the American League rules or were going to use the National League rules, because somebody is disadvantaged, he said. Both teams -- the National League team when theyre in the American League park and the American League team when theyre here in the National League park -- have to make an adjustment. The Browns coaching search remains incomplete.OAKLAND, Calif. -- If he had to choose one highlight play, Nelson Cruz preferred his run-saving, diving catch to his towering, three-run homer. Those contributions with the bat and glove played a huge part in the first-place Texas Rangers holding momentum in the AL West with a 6-2 victory against the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday for a winning series. Cruz connected for his 10th homer in the fifth, then chased down Brandon Moss line drive to the gap in right-centre for a defensive gem to end the sixth with Oakland runners on first and second. "I had four or five steps before I got to the ball, I thought I had a chance before I dived," Cruz said. "I think the catch in that situation was nice." Alexi Ogando thought so. He went on to earn his first career win against Oakland. Ogando (4-2) didnt allow a hit until Eric Sogards leadoff double in the sixth. The right-hander won his second straight decision and earned only his second victory in seven outings since consecutive wins starting the season. Cruz greeted reliever Jesse Chavez in the fifth with a first-pitch drive to left, highlighting the Rangers four-run inning. "Hey, Im an aggressive hitter," Cruz said, "Im not going to change my approach." Lance Berkman hit a two-run single and Adrian Beltre added an RBI single a day after hitting a 10th-inning home run. Elvis Andrus stole his ninth and 10th bases as the Rangers won their first series in Oakland since Sept. 20-22, 2011. Ogando was thrilled with Cruzs day -- especially that pretty catch. "Wow," the pitcher said. "It was an excellent play that helped so much. Its what we needed at that moment." Derek Norris hit a sacrifice fly in the sixth for Oaklands first run. Coco Crisp, fresh off the disabled list, added one of his own in the seventh. Last Oct. 3, Ogando entered in relief of the Rangers 12-5 loss in Game No. 162 and was tagged for four runs in the eighth inning as the As rallied to grab the AL West crown away from the Rangers. Now, with the AL West-leading Rangers on a nice roll in mid-May, Ogandos first road win in his last six outings gave Texas some momentum heading home for a key four-game series with the Tigers starting Thursday. The right-hander allowed two runs on four hits in six innings in his majors-leading seventh road start, his second ever against the As and first in the Coliseum. Cruzs home run gave the Rangers 14 in their last six games -- including three Tuesday night, two of them by Moreland. "Weve been playing real well all season long," Cruz said. "The offence has been getting clutch hits all year long, and the way Ogando threw was nice." The Rangers wrapped up a 6-3 trip, and tthese clubs meet again for three games beginning Monday in Arlington.ddddddddddddTexas played its majors-high 25th road game, but begins a four-game series against AL champion Detroit on Thursday night. After losing the series opener 5-1, first-place Texas snapped a five-game losing streak in Oakland with a 6-5 win in 10 innings Tuesday night on the way to a third winning series in the last four. "We wanted to come here and play good baseball and were fortunate we did," manager Ron Washington said. The As loaded the bases with one out against Rangers reliever Michael Kirkman in the seventh, but got only Crisps sacrifice fly. Oakland starter Dan Straily (1-2) had his problems, too. He plunked Ian Kinsler and Andrus back to back to load the bases with two outs in the third, then Berkmans single up the middle gave the Rangers the lead. Straily avoided further damage in the fourth. After consecutive one-out walks to Mitch Moreland and David Murphy, and a wild pitch that advanced them both, Straily got a pair of flyball outs to escape unscathed. He walked four and struck out two in 4 1-3 innings of his second straight losing start and fourth consecutive winless outing. "Were not playing well right now and we have to power through this, win some games and get on a roll," manager Bob Melvin said.
