PITTSBURGH -- The San Diego Padres scored a run against Pittsburghs Vance Worley in the first inning, and the Pirates starter noticed they were ready to hit his fastball. So he threw more cutters. Worleys change in plans helped him outduel Ian Kennedy, and Gregory Polanco and Josh Harrison had three hits each as the Pirates beat the Padres 2-1 on Friday night. "I was just making adjustments," Worley said. "I thought they were sitting more on my fastballs in to lefties and away from righties so I decided to show them a little something different and keep them off-balance." Worley (5-1) struck out a season-high seven in seven innings and gave up one run, five hits and a walk. "I think he was able to settle into his rhythm toward the end of the second," Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. "His cutter played extremely well." With the usage of his cutter, Worley was able to finish with a flourish by striking out the side in the seventh. "By the end of my outing I was able to have (the fastball) back again because they were too busy thinking about the other stuff," he said. Kennedy (8-10) was pulled after six innings and allowed two runs -- one earned -- and seven hits. He walked three and struck out five. Tony Watson preserved the one-run lead with a perfect eighth, and Mark Melancon earned his career-high 21st save by striking out the side in the ninth. San Diego scored in the first on Everth Cabreras leadoff double, a sacrifice, and Seth Smiths sacrifice fly. Pittsburgh scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Harrison led off with a triple and scored on Polancos single. Polanco later scored on Russell Martins sacrifice fly. Pittsburgh loaded the bases with no outs in the third, and San Diego did the same in the sixth. "We just couldnt get the big hit," Padres manager Bud Black said. "We had some opportunities but couldnt drive in the big run. We stressed Worley a couple of times but we couldnt break through." The Pirates (62-53) moved a season-high nine games over .500, despite the recent absence of team leaders Andrew McCutchen and Neil Walker. "Were all here to step up," Worley said. "Its a team game, and if one guy goes down, its up to somebody else to come in and step up." TRAINERS ROOM Padres: Right-hander Andrew Cashner (shoulder) was set to make his first rehab start Friday for Single-A Lake Elsinore. He was placed on the disabled list on June 23 with right shoulder soreness. Pirates: Center fielder Andrew McCutchen (rib) continues to add to his mobility and resistance exercises, according to Hurdle, and is progressing in a "positive fashion." Hurdle said McCutchen will attempt to take swings. ... Right-hander Gerrit Cole (lat) is slated to make a third rehab start on Sunday for Triple-A Indianapolis. He was placed on the disabled list July 9. ... Second baseman Neil Walker (back) missed his third straight game. Hurdle said Walker "felt better" after taking batting practice. Grilli hasnt pitched since straining his left oblique in late April. Manager Clint Hurdle says the right-hander will make a couple of appearances in middle relief before the team determines whether to return Grilli to the back end of the bullpen. http://www.padressale.com/. New York then missed its next six shots and scored only two points the rest of the night. The Los Angeles Clippers defence and the Knicks general ineptitude both played a role in the unsurprising finish to a meeting of two teams headed in opposite directions. Randy Jones Jersey . "For the past several weeks, Logan has been dealing and playing with an upper body injury," said general manager Doug Wilson in a statement. "Despite his efforts to play through it, the injury has not responded as we had hoped and Logan has made the decision to undergo a surgical procedure to repair the problem. Tony Gwynn Jersey . He could have transferred when academic sanctions barred the Huskies from the NCAA tournament his junior season. The post-round handshakes after a practice round at the PGA Championship were replaced by fist bumps and someone suggested that those in the scrum with Canadas best golfer should don surgical masks before chatting. Clearly, whatever Graham DeLaet had, nobody wants to catch. On Saturday night, after struggling through a difficult round at the World Golf Championship Bridgestone Invitational, he went home and started to get sick. "It was pretty bad," said DeLaet, recounting the past 60 hours. "On Sunday, I literally didnt get out of bed all day. . . except to go to the bathroom." For the first time in his professional career he was forced to withdraw mid-tournament. But clearly he wasnt in any shape to tee it up. He was so dehydrated that he needed two IV bags to replenish the fluids. He figures he lost 10 pounds as there was plenty more going out than going in. While he was well enough to play nine holes at Valhalla on Tuesday – and that might be debatable considering the rumpled, fatigued figure that was trudging over the fairways -- he was considering more IVs after he played. "Im a little tired, a little weak," DeLaet said. "Im feeling better physically but its just kind of taken its toll on me a little bit. But I should be ready to go physically, especially with a late tee time Thursday." The illness that felled DeLaet came at an awkward tiime.dddddddddddd After a mid-season slow patch in his play, he seemed to find his game at the RBC Canadian Open, tying the course record at Royal Montreal on Friday. He also played well through the first two rounds in Akron. Now hell be playing Valhalla and a major championship with very little groundwork "The preparation will be a little bit different," he said. "Nine holes [Tuesday] and nine holes [Wednesday]. The main thing is just to try and be as physically ready as I can. Theres no real expectations and that might be a good thing." Indeed it could. At the start of this season, DeLaet admitted that last year he built up the majors too much, putting some roadblocks in his own way. That wont be the case here. He will rely heavily on the work of caddie Julien Trudeau who has been on several scouting missions around the course to pick out lines for tee shots and try to grab the nuances of the greens. Going in almost blind wont be entirely new for DeLaet. Hes zipped around courses sight unseen and had some success in the past. "I remember when Ive gone and played Monday qualifiers, playing a course almost blind and end up shooting six or seven under so hopefully thats the case. Were going to do all we can to be ready but the main thing is to try and be healthy by Thursday." Exactly because its unlikely theyll allow him to play with the IV in his arm.
