TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A young but talented Florida State hopes its 83-78 victory Sunday over No. 21 Florida is the first of many big wins with Atlantic Coast Conference play set to start in two weeks.Tonight we showed the world what we can become and what we have in hold for the future, said Dwayne Bacon, who scored a season-high 24 points. It is the Seminoles first victory over a ranked nonconference team at home since they beat the Gators on Dec. 7, 2008.Coach Leonard Hamilton was even a little leery about what to expect going into the game. Florida had already faced some good tests in Miami, Gonzaga and Duke but Florida State was not as tested and had won its past three games by an average of 41 points.FSU (10-1) struggled for the first 10 minutes, committing seven turnovers as Florida (7-3) scored 15 of its first 19 points off turnovers. The Gators would lead by as many as five before the Seminoles started to settle down and take a 36-34 lead at halftime. In the second half, Bacon took over. The sophomore guard scored nine points during a 15-4 run early in the second half that helped the Seminoles take control after it was tied at 38.I thought in the second half we played with a little bit more poise and executed better, Hamilton said. We had some moments where we were indecisive but had quick recoveries. This is type of game that helped grow up a little bit.Florida State led by 13 midway through the second half before the Gators started to slowly chip away. Florida used a 14-5 run to get within three, but could not get closer. They were terrific offensively in the second half. Bacon got them going not necessarily him scoring but breaking down our defense, Florida coach Mike White said. In the second half we were not the same team defensively. We got to maintain that energy and intensity level.Terance Mann had 16 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double.Kasey Hill scored a career-high 21 points for Florida, and KeVaughn Allen added 15.Said Hill of Bacons game: He just straight-line drives. Youve got to step in front of him and cut him off and we didnt do that.BIG PICTUREFlorida: Coach Mike White said before the game that he wanted to see his team play with more poise and also play with more consistency when it found itself on the other end of a scoring run. This loss proves that the Gators still have a ways to go in that area before they open Southeastern Conference play Dec. 29 at Arkansas.Florida State: The Seminoles nearly squandered a 13-point lead. But unlike the Temple game, which they lost by three after leading by 18, they were able to hold on and get their third win in non-conference play against a team from a Power Five conference.POLL IMPLICATIONSFlorida could drop out of the Top 25 after dropping both of its games this week. Florida State was ranked for a week in late November and could make a bid to return after winning six straight.STREAKINGThe Seminoles have won three straight over the Gators for the first time in eight years. It is the fourth time in series history they have a three-game winning streak over the Gators.UP NEXTFlorida: The Gators will have their final game of their 11-game road trip to start the season on Saturday against Charlotte in the second game of the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise, Florida.Florida State: The Seminoles have finals this week and do not have their next game until Saturday when they face Manhattan in the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise, Florida.---More AP college basketball at http://collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25---Follow Joe Reedy on Twitter at www.twitter.com/joereedyAir Max Pas Cher Chine . Jefferson has been charged with assaulting his girlfriend. CHICAGO -- The never shy Todd Frazier had been focused on one thing: 40 home runs.I dont if you guys know, but hes been talking about it for a while, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said, smirking. I know Ive heard it a lot.Frazier picked a good time to reach the mark for the first time in his career, providing all the offense Miguel Gonzalez needed in Chicagos 1-0 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on a soggy Wednesday night.Frazier became the seventh White Sox player to reach the milestone when he connected off knuckleballer Eddie Gamboa (0-2) with two out in the seventh. Frazier is hitting .391 (18 for 46) during a 12-game hitting streak. Not many people have hit 40 home runs in a year, Frazier said, so its a good feat to have.Gonzalez (5-7) overcame a 1 hour, 16-minute rain delay in the third inning by throwing 25 pitches in two separate throwing sessions in the batting cage, determined not to have his last start of the season shortened.Im not sure what Gonzalez did over there in that other clubhouse, but he definitely didnt get out of rhythm, Rays manager Kevin Cash said.Gonzalez retired 18 of 19 before being lifted after Logan Forsythes one-out single to left in the ninth. David Robertson immediately got a double-play grounder to finish the three-hitter for his 37th save in 44 tries. It was a satisfying finish for the Gonzalez, who was released by Baltimore at the end of spring training and signed to a minor league deal in April. The right-hander became a key cog in the rotation and hopes to re-sign in the offseason. They were really good about letting me know when I went to Triple-A what was going on, the guys that were doing well or the guys who were going to get an opportunity to pitch, Gonzalez said. Youve just got to run with it and I thought I had a pretty good season. The game was also delayed by 21 minutes before the start. It was 57 degrees at first pitch and rain came and went amid blustery conditions as a tiny crowd watched Chicago win its fifth straight. The game itself lasted only 2 hours, 10 minutes, thanks to a dominant Gonzalez.Hes been greaat.ddddddddddddHe really has, Ventura said. You watch him battle and locate and its not rear back and blow somebody away. Hes got great movement and great control and poise on the mound. I love watching him pitch.Rays left-hander Blake Snell allowed one hit while getting five outs, but was replaced by Ryan Garton after the second delay.I wish that it didnt rain so I could have seen what would have happened, Snell said.Gamboa entered in the fifth and flustered the White Sox into off-balance swings and soft outs until Frazier pulled a 74 mph knuckler into the left-field seats for his 98th RBI.Gonzalez worked around Luke Mailes one-out double in the sixth to end the only threat by the Rays, who have lost six straight. The rainy, lengthy night capped an odd day for the White Sox. USA Today reported the front office has decided to retain the embattled Ventura, but the manager had yet to decide whether he wanted to return.Ventura deflected pregame questions about his future, saying any decisions would be made after the season ends Sunday.TRAINERS ROOMRays: OF Kevin Kiermaier (bruised left hand) was in the lineup after a two-game absence.White Sox: Lefty-hitting RF Adam Eaton didnt start, but played in the field in the ninth a night after returning following a three-game absence due to crashing into the outfield wall in Cleveland. I felt a little sore, but I was fresh, Eaton said. . 2B Tyler Saladino (back) missed his sixth straight game.PITCHING CHANGERays RHP Chase Whitley will make his first start in place of LHP Drew Smyly in Sundays season finale at Texas. Whitley, who has a 1.74 ERA out of the bullpen since returning from Tommy John surgery last month, is scheduled to throw 75-80 pitches.
