OXFORD, Miss. -- Mississippi doesnt have an obvious offensive star for the first time in several seasons.Rebels coach Andy Kennedy said thats not necessarily a bad thing, and he hopes a little balance and depth could help lead the program to a third NCAA Tournament in five years. When you look at our team, I think we have five, six or -- Im not kidding -- seven guys who could average double figures, Kennedy said. Its a vastly different look from the past four seasons, when Ole Miss had some of the leagues most prolific scorers. Marshall Henderson scored nearly 20 points per game over a two-year stretch and then came Stefan Moody, who was the SECs leading scorer with 23.6 points per game last year. Now the Rebels will have more of an ensemble cast which features returners like Sebastian Saiz, Rasheed Brooks and Marcanvis Hymon and newcomers like Cullen Neal, Justas Furmanivicius and Deandre Burnett. The 6-foot-9 Saiz is the teams most experienced player, entering his fourth season with the program after averaging 11.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Kennedy said its likely he could average double figures in both points and rebounds if healthy.Hes one of my favorite guys who I have ever had here, Kennedy said. His energy is always right. Hes very positive. Hes going to put in his work and hes really evolved offensively.A good chunk of the teams perimeter scoring figures to come from Burnett and Neal. The 6-foot-2 Burnett sat out last season after transferring from Miami while the 6-5 Neal is a graduate transfer from New Mexico.-----Some other things to know about Ole Miss this season:BURNETTS TIME: Burnetts chance to lead a college basketball team has been a long time coming. The 2012 Parade All-American spent a year in prep school before going to Miami. He injured his wrist in 2013 before his freshman season and didnt play his first college game until 2014, when he averaged seven points per game. He decided to transfer to Ole Miss and had to sit out last season because of transfer rules. Hell be a 22-year-old junior this season.SAIZ BACK AT FULL HEALTH: Saiz returns after battling a scary eye injury last season that resulted in surgery to fix a detached retina. He says the injury has fully healed, though hell still wear protective goggles during games. Kennedy said Saiz is so effective, because of his 7-foot-6 wingspan which allows him to finish around the basket even though he doesnt possess elite athleticism.LEAVING HOME: Neal, the New Mexico graduate transfer, will be playing for Kennedy after spending his first three seasons in college playing for his dad Craig Neal. Kennedy said Neal has been tremendous. Another very hard worker. I dont pretend to think this is anything like what hes been in in the past because he was in a different system. And he was also in a different system playing for his father. So this is something completely new to him as well.OLD MAN KENNEDY: Kennedy is in his 11th season as the Ole Miss basketball coach, making him the longest-tenured basketball coach in the league. The 48-year-old has averaged more than 21 wins per season during his 10 previous seasons, making the NCAA Tournament twice and the NIT five times.VERSATILE JUSTAS: Kennedy is very high on Furmanivicius, a 6-foot-6 junior who can play both guard and forward. He averaged 12.5 points and 9.3 rebounds per game at Three Rivers (Mo.) C.C. and is a candidate to jump into the Rebels starting lineup from the first game.---Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP .---AP College Basketball website: www.collegebasketball.ap.org . OAKLAND, Calif. -- Sean Manaea faced plenty of hurdles already in his rookie season. The Oakland As left-hander gave up 16 earned runs in his first three major league starts and had an 11.37 ERA. He had a scary trip to the disabled list because of a strained muscle in his pitching forearm.Manaea dealt with a three-hour rain delay before a start in Minnesota. Then he was forced to make an emergency relief appearance Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays -- two days before a scheduled start -- after Oakland pitchers Rich Hill and Andrew Triggs were injured in the first inning.I was just in a panic getting up here (to the clubhouse) and getting dressed, Manaea said Thursday. I didnt have my jersey on. I didnt have my belt. In my mind, I was just chilling and relaxing, just watching the game. The first inning comes around, and its just crazy.Manaea held the Blue Jays to two runs on three hits in five innings, striking out four and walking none in his second consecutive strong outing. He pitched seven shutout innings against the Houston Astros on July 10, allowing five hits, striking out six and walking none.Manaea will try to continue his hot streak Friday against Tampa Bay when he makes his 13th start of the season, facing Rays right-hander Jake Odorizzi in the second game of a four-game series.I just have to learn from every game, the ups and downs, Manaea said before the Rays 7-3 victory in the series opener. Obviously, Ive had a lot of downs and some ups. I try to take something away from each game and think on that posiitive note.ddddddddddddNot having the walks the past two games has been awesome. Im really, really happy how my mechanics are, how I feel and my pitches. Everything feels good right now.Its been big for me not walking anybody and not giving up as many hits as I had been. Things are starting to click, starting to get the ball rolling. Im just feeling really good about how things are turning out.Odorizzi (4-5, 4.39 EA) is having an up-and-down season, but he comes into the game off a high note against the Baltimore Orioles. He allowed two runs over six innings in a 5-2 victory on Sunday. He struck out seven and walked one.It was a good start to the second half, Odorizzi said. First half was a little tough I think for everybody on our staff. It was good to get off in the second half on the right foot, get back to the way were all capable of pitching. Well hopefully just keep going from there.Odorizzi is trying to recapture the consistency he had last season when he finished 9-9 with a 3.35 ERA in 28 starts.Last year I had consistency from start to finish, and this year theres just been some blips on the radar, he said. As a whole group, as a staff, weve kind of had that same thing happen to us.Im just ready to get back to consistency, going six, seven innings every time out. Im feeling good. Everything health-wise is fantastic. I feel great. Im just ready to go out and have a good second half. ' ' '
